Why World War Ii Was a Watershed Event free essay sample
Some countries of Europe continued to live under a regime of a free democracy. But in others, the power came to the communists that were under strict control of the USSR. Due to this, World War II was a watershed event. Several changes occurred of a social aspect. The roles of women dramatically increased. After the war, there occurred lots of questions about genders and their roles. During World War II due to the fact that lots of men went to war and had to be at the fronts, women took their places at factories, and other aspects of everyday life. After the war ended, women continued to work there because of decrease of the population of men. This called for a revision of the theoretical standpoint of a womanââ¬â¢s role in society. Women started actively engaging in all aspects of everyday life. Their role each year increased. Nowadays, women take place in almost all the jobs that men are allowed to do such as in economics or politics, but even today they are fighting for their full rights and to be as equal as men. We will write a custom essay sample on Why World War Ii Was a Watershed Event or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In 1945 the Manhattan project was finished and the nuclear bomb was created. Churchill wrote a note to Stalin saying that a new, powerful weapon was created. Stalin had a neutral reaction to this news but secretly to himself, he knew what Churchill was talking about. The nuclear bomb was created. He ordered the construction of his nuclear weapons to speed up. On August 6, 1945 a nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and on the ninth a nuclear bomb was dropped on Nagasaki from the USA. The results of these two bombs were awful. The Soviet Union then created a nuclear bomb. The first testing of this newly created bomb was tested in Kazakhstan on August 29, 1949. On September 3, 1949 a US plane came to check if the air in the area was contaminated in the area of Kamchatka. Based on these tests, the US found out that the Soviet Union had also created a nuclear weapon. Due to this, a new time in humanity occurred. Of course the creation of the nuclear bomb was a watershed event of World War II in which more that 60 million people died. The United States thought that with the creation of the bomb and having such a weapon, they would no longer have to get involved in wars and would have peace. But the creations of the nuclear weapon led to other results. Nuclear power stations were being created that were able to give cheap energy and allowed progress. But, nuclear power stations were also very dangerous. In 1986 in the USSR, there was an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. Due to this accident, a lot of people became sick from the radiation and that radiation was very bad for the environment and everything living around that area. But even due to the dangers, people cannot let go of nuclear energy. Finally, lots of geopolitical changes occurred after the end of World War II. Still during the time of the war in 1945, there was a conference that was held in Yalta (USSR). The people that participated in this conference were Winston Churchill from England, Stalin from the USSR, and Roosevelt from the USA. They were discussing new geographical borders of Europe and peace among countries. As a result of this conference, part of Germany was given to France and part to Poland. The territories of Czechoslovakia, Hungary and other countries of eastern Europe were also changing. Furthermore after the conference took place , Berlin was divided into 4 sections of occupation between Great Britain, USA, the Soviet Union and France. Furthermore in 1949, the German Democratic Republic was formed . The communist party ruled there under the control of the USSR. This was Eastern Germany and part of Berlin. In August 1961, the Berlin wall was built to divide the east and west of Berlin. People living on either side of the wall were not allowed to cross to the other side without being killed or returned to their side of the wall. This wall existed till 1990. At this time, the parts of Germany were reunited again. In conclusion, World War II was known as a watershed event because of all the changes it brought upon the world. World War II gave women rights and allowed them to become more equal to men. Moreover during World War II, the nuclear bomb was created. It was a weapon of destruction leaving people in constant fear of their homes being destroyed and their lives at stake. Finally during World War II lots of geopolitical changes occurred. Different countries were at peace and others recovering from the great war. So World War II was known as a watershed event.

Globalisation as a Cause of Poverty and Inequality Essay
Globalisation as a Cause of Poverty and Inequality - Essay Example à However, the international capital inflows can be reversed to create boom-and-bust cycles that can be detrimental to the social welfare of the affected regions. Globalization encourages labor mobility (Lecher and Boil, 2012). However, skilled and specialized labor force may take advantage of the global market to access markets with high demand and low skill supply. Globalization may also enhance immobility; unskilled workers are prevented from migrating to developed nations. Currently, globalization poses a scenario based on the idyllic view of the general globe where technology and capital have a free flow in a market where access to knowledge and information is vast, efficient markets, and where there is equity in market participation capacities among the households. Globalisation can partially be attributed to the increasing improvements made in the technological field, minimized costs of transportation, as well as due to some deliberate choosing on behalf of many nations to further integrate their economies with the global economy. In essence, globalization refers to capital market liberalization, trade restrictionsââ¬â¢ removal, for instance, quotas and tariffs, and free movements of human resources. All these can be considered to be economic globalizationââ¬â¢s indicators. The 80s and 90s saw many countries open up their borders leading to reduced restrictions on direct foreign investment as well as curtailing quantitative controls on imports which reduced the tariff rates.à In general, the process of liberalisation and globalisation leads to reduced poverty and high economic growth and development. Globalisation comes in many facets hence a mixed set of outcomes. The argument brought about by anti-globalists is that globalisation has adverse effects on poor people in LDCs. Countries such as the US had thrived in managing the process of globalisation incisively proving that globalisation can be a driving force to economic growth and development and those incapable of managing the process ended up with dismal economic growth and development as well as increased poverty and high inequality in income distribution, showing the adverse effects globalisation can have. A number of issues have been highlighted linking globalisation to inequality: i. Inequal ity rates have increased since the 80s. ii. This high inequality rates are caused by other factors other than the traditional factors i.e. urban bias, education inequality, and concentration of land. iii. High inequality levels can decrease

Is school incentive programs works for students Essay
Is school incentive programs works for students - Essay Example Currently, many schools have initiated incentive programs that provide prizes to students in the form of money when they score well on their exams. These prizes have shown improvement in overall test scores and childrenââ¬â¢s performance (Medina). The notion of incentive programs in schools is quite controversial and brings up the significance of temporary academic accomplishements in comparison to long-lasting behavorial changes in children. Many schools in United States are increasingly adapting the idea of incentive programs. They have observed that paying for performance is an effective method of improving the studentsââ¬â¢ attitude and behavior in school. In New York alone, more than 200 schools are experimenting with provision of one or more incentives for both students as well as teachers (Medina). Children who score good, are provided with money as prizes. Children are not the only ones profitting from these incentive programs. Teachers are also provided with bonus mone y who achieve improving their studentsââ¬â¢overall scores. Up till now the New York city has spent more than $500,000 on 5,237 students in 58 different schools. Money is not the only form of rewards; meal gift vouchers, gift certificates, food parties at school are some other forms of incentives for the students (Medina). The overall reaction to this new concept is mixed. Many consider it as worth trying and experimenting upon to observe the positive outcomes. Teachers also find it as a good opportunity and are motivated due to the rewards received by them as well. However, the critics consider it as an inappropriate stimulus for the students. Knowledge should be acquired for oneââ¬â¢s own sake of learning and self-development rather than a source of money-making and business. Behavorial sciences show that although rewards are somewhat better than punishments but they produce a similar outcome of temporary compliance. Children only show improvement in their behavior until they are receiving the reward. They stop when the incentive is no longer provided. Extrinsic motivators are not helpful in altering the emotional and cognitive commitments of behavior, and even if achieved are not desirable or aimed (Kohn 1,2). The rewards only pursue the acheivment of goals and fail in many cases to induce good values and the sense of ââ¬Å"what type of person I want to beâ⬠. Many studies have shown that people who are expecting a reward do not perform well than those who are not expecting anything. Rewards do not produce an intrinsic motivation of performing a task and interest of doing it for oneââ¬â¢s own sake. Rewards are just a method of controlling a person which ultimatley also alters the relationship between children and adults (Kohn 2,3). Rewards are a way of bribing the children. Children do not acquire any personal interest or internal motivation for the task rather, they are only doing it for the incentive, which affects the quality of their work, their sense of creativity and their sense exploring new ideas. Rewards and incentives are just a method of achieving what a teacher or parents want from the child. Rewards are an obstacle in the way of creating a nurturing, creative and experimental environment for the children, where they learn for their own sake and interest. Providing incentives and rewards cannot produce good values in a child

The Socio-Political Background as Manifested in the Novels of Maria Essay
The Socio-Political Background as Manifested in the Novels of Maria Edgeworth, Castle Rackrent, The Absentee, Ormond, and Harrin - Essay Example Though not a report of the exact events that went on, Maria Edgeworthââ¬â¢s stories are generally based on her perspective of the socio-political background and events of her days as she grew up as a young girl in Ireland. To this effect, it is common to find and link each of her writings to specific events in the history of Ireland. In her own little way, this was one more way that Maria Edgeworth thought she could use to trumpet her concerns across to the world at large to be the good judges of the situation of her homeland. While discussing Maria Edgeworthââ¬â¢s novels and other narrative works, literary critics are often eloquent about her close association as well as evident familiarity with the Irish historical events, and postcolonial and historical studies dealing with Ireland as a British dependency. Throughout her growing years, Edgeworth was a keen observer of and witness to all the major historical and political chronological events that changed Ireland. Due to her depiction of the injustices suffered by the native Irish people at the hands of imprudent Anglo-Irish landlords, Edgeworth was popularly known as the Ascendancy writer among literary circles. In almost all the novels, Edgeworthââ¬â¢s narrative style features the simple lifestyle of the native Irish peasantry, the imprudent absenteeism of the Anglo-Irish rulers and landowners, Protestant domination on the native Catholics of Ireland, and all other characteristic features of the eighteenth century Ireland. Undoubtedly, the accolade, ââ¬ËAscendancy writerââ¬â¢ accorded to Maria Edgeworth has its roots in Maria Edgeworthââ¬â¢s role played both as a writer and as a social figure in Ireland in the days of the Protestant Ascendancy. The Protestant Ascendancy was a 25 year long series of events that occurred in Ireland from 1775 to 1800. Though Maria was barely seven years at the time the Ascendancy started, she grew to gain a lot of insight into the whole issue because the Asce ndancy lasted very long. What is more, Maria Edgeworthââ¬â¢s father was an influential Politian of the country at the time of the Protestant Ascendancy and so this offered Maria a lot of useful understanding of the wrongs and rights with the Ascendancy. Starting as an observer at the tender age of seven, Maria Edgeworth grew up to play active role in making her feelings and perspective of the Ascendancy known. For instance through the ââ¬Å"habit of hiding in her father's magistrates' room for the purpose of taking notes of the peculiar manners or expressions of the litigantsâ⬠(Lawless, 1095), Maria Edgeworth was put in a better position to pass authentic and factual comments of the protestant Ascendancy in her writings. So as her views and perception of the Protestant Ascendancy became so great, Maria Edgeworth was associated with the title ââ¬ËAscendancy Writerââ¬â¢. Going back to give a brief account of the Protestant Ascendancy, as it has a great impact on the wr itings of Maria Edgeworth, it can be inferred that the expression ââ¬ËProtestant Ascendancyââ¬â¢ refers to the period in Irelandââ¬â¢s history when a minority of great landowners, protestant clergy and some professionals dominated the political, economic and social terrain of Ireland. The underlining factor was that the minority few who dominated and

Binary Phase Shift Keying BPSK Modulation Demodulation Computer Science Essay
Binary Phase Shift Keying BPSK Modulation Demodulation Computer Science Essay This experiment is based on the Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation/demodulation technique. The aim of the experiment is to gain familiarity with the components of a simple data transmission system, gain experience using an experimental communication system and studying its performance under the influence of white noise and also, to compare experimental results with theoretical deductions. Bandpass modulation, of which BPSK is a type, is a process whereby, a sinusoid usually called a carrier wave, is modulated or have its characteristics changed by a digital pulse baseband signal in other to enable wireless based transmission. In BPSK modulation, the phase of the carrier waveform is shifted to either 0à ° or 180à ° by the modulating data signal. To effectively model the transmission channel, the AWGN generator is used which adds the effect of noise to the signal at the receiver in other to properly characterise what obtains in real systems. SNR measurements are taken after the noise is added before the receiver and results of each stage of the experiment are presented. 2.0 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results obtained from the experiment and brief discussions are now presented. 2.1 The frequency of the waveform was measured to be 1.493kHz 2.2 The amplitude of the waveform was measured to be 3.608V 2.3 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGADesktopLAB RESULTSPart 2.bmp Fig. 1: Square Waveform from NE555 timer circuit. The timer circuit produces a sequence of ones and zeros which together with the resistors and capacitor, produces a square waveform. It can be observed that the square top and bottom are not perfectly straight but with ripples, this is due to the resonance effect presented by the capacitor. Also, the rising pattern of the top is due to the voltage rise time in the capacitor. 2.4 The frequency of the message sequence is measured to be 374Hz 2.5 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 4 5.bmp Fig. 2: Message sequence at the output of the frequency divider. The SN74LS74 integrated circuit implements a second order frequency divider, 2n (n=2). Hence the frequency of the timer circuit is divided by four. Hence, this is also evident in the frequency of the message sequence in 2.4 above. 2.6 The cut-off frequency of the 2nd order Butterworth low pass filter is given by; The cut-off frequency is the frequency at which the magnitude of the transfer function drops to 0.7071 of its maximum value which represents the point at which the power in the circuit is 3dB less than the maximum value. 2.7 The frequency of the sinusoid at the output of the filter was measured to be 1.328kHz. 2.8 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.Wordpart 8.jpg Fig. 3: Output of the first and second Butterworth LPF. A B A Output of first filter; B Output of second filter The Butterworth lowpass filter is used to generate the sinusoidal carrier required for the baseband signal. The Butterworth filter has a gentle roll-off, has no ripple in the pass or stop band hence, it has a monotonic response. To maximise the smoothness of the sinusoid, we use two of such filters in series. 2.9 The RC highpass filter is used to remove the DC components of the sinusoid (since it will only allow frequencies from the cut off frequency upwards) and convert it into a non-return to zero one. The cut-off frequency is given by: 2.10 The frequency of the modulated signal was measured to be 1.408kHz. 2.11 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 11.bmp Fig. 4: Output of the RC filter and the inverting amplifier circuits. A B A RC filter output B Inverting amplifier output The outputs of the RC filter and the inverting amplifier differ by a phase shift of 180à °, to fulfil the requirement for BPSK where we need antipodal modulated signals. Since the gain of the inverting amplifier is unity, there is no change to the amplitude of the inverted carrier. 2.12 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 10 12.bmp Fig. 5: BPSK signal at the output of the adder circuit. A The analogue switch produces a 0à ° shifted sinusoid when the message signal is high (a 1) and a 180à ° shifted sinusoid when the message signal is low (a 0). The two outputs streams are combined in the adder circuit which has a gain of unity so that no modification is made to the signal amplitude. The result of this is a stream of 1s and 0s represented by the sinusoidal waveform in fig. 5 above. Point A depicts the sudden phase change as the bits changes to connote a transition from a high to a low and vice-versa. If we begin with a 1, then the fig. 4 would represent 10101010. 2.13 The bandwidth of the noise signal is 500kHz. 2.14 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 14.jpg Fig. 6: BPSK signal with white noise. The AWGN channel helps to simulate what can typically obtain in real communication environments and it was observed that in real systems, the signal is not really as elegant as presented in fig. 5 but the addition of noise means the receiver will require some form of intelligence and signal processing in other to correctly detect the transmitted message. 2.15C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 15.jpg Fig. 7: BPSK noisy signal at output of RC lowpass filter. The cut-off frequency of this filter is given by; hence it will cut off signals above 15.92kHz. It was observed that after the application of this filter, the noise level was significantly reduced as evident comparing fig. 6 and 7, since the noise contained a large amount of frequency components higher than 15.92kHz due to its bandwidth of 500kHz. 2.16 The signal at the output of the integrator takes the shape of a sawtooth waveform. This is because integrating a square waveform produces a sawtooth waveform. 2.17 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 16 17.bmp Fig. 8: Output of the integrator circuit. A B The multiplier and integrator circuit represents a matched filter implementation at the receiver. Point A represents the zero point i.e the beginning of a new symbol or bit in this case, when the integrator is re-set. As such, when a 1 changes to a 0, we have a re-set to zero point and the direction of the triangular shape changes to the opposite. Point B is the integration phase proper. It is not smooth due to the effect of noise in the system. Also, the rise is a direct result of the capacitor charging. 2.18 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 18.jpg Fig. 9: Pulse application to integrator. A B A Integrator output; B Reset Pulse As displayed on fig. 8 above, the reset pulse is applied to the integrator at the symbol transition instant which is seen to be the beginning of every half cycle to reset the integrator to zero. 2.19 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 19a.png Fig. 10: The Reference Signal C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.Word19b.jpg Fig. 11: The Sampling Pulse C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 19c.jpg Fig. 12: The Reset Pulse The reference signal is obtained from the SN74LS74 frequency divider of the transmitter thus it is the originally transmitted message sequence. The sampling and reset instances are done at the same time that is at the half cycle. 2.20 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 20.jpg Fig. 13: Output of the Comparator. This is where the original baseband signal is regenerated. From fig. 8, when the output of the integrator is positive, an output voltage of 5 volts is produced at the comparator and when the integrator output is negative, a 0 volt output is obtained. This resulted in fig. 13 above showing the alternating 5 and 0 volts or 1s and 0s which depicts our detected signal. The frequency of the detected signal is 1.419kHz. 2.21 The length of the delayed version of the data symbol produced at the receiver is 1.804ms 2.22 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 21 and 22 Greeen channel 2 yellow channel 1.bmp Fig. 14: The Delayed pulse and Original data signal. A B A- Delayed Pulse; B Original Pulse Comparing the original data signal against the delayed version, it is observed that though they are of the same period, B has longer duration positive half cycle while A compensates with a longer negative half cycle. Also, the time delay between them is about a half cycle. 2.23 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 23 yellow delay green comparator.bmp Fig. 15: Input Signals to the XOR circuit. A B A Delayed original signal; B Detected signal The detected signal B is compared against the delayed version of the original signal A, because B generally, B would have experienced some delay and hence to effectively ascertain if an error occurred, its best to compare it against a delayed original as represented by A. The exclusivity of the circuit lies in the fact that when A B are the same, a 0 will be produced while when they are different denoting an error, a 1 will be produced. 2.24 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 24 green 2 yellow 1.jpgFig. 16: Input Signals to the first NAND gate. A B A Sampling Pulse; B XOR Output A NAND gate will only produce a zero when both inputs are high. Hence a zero is obtained when the sampling instant coincides with a high output from the XOR circuit. 2.25 C:Documents and SettingsAGEBNIGALocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.WordPart 25 yellow chn1 5v dc green chn2 1st input.png Fig. 17: Input Signals to the second NAND gate. A B C A Input 5Vdc; B Output of first NAND gate; C Zero point Since a NAND gate will produce a high when both inputs are not the same and when they are both 0, a 5V dc (always high or 1) is applied to one of the inputs and the output of the first NAND gate to the other. Hence, at the points where B comes down to zero (C), the output of the NAND gate will record a high which implies an error has occurred. 2.26 To estimate the BER; Where Vs (rms value of signal amplitude) =514mV, Vn (rms value of noise amplitude) = 0-10dB W (AWGN channel bandwidth) = 500kHz T (modulated Signal period) = 656.25ÃŽà ¼s SNR received signal to noise ratio BER bit error rate or error probability. Table 1 below presents the values. Table 1: Summary of Results Fig. 18: BER Performance Plot 3.0 CONCLUSION The BER performance plot of fig. 18 shows that the behaviour of the experimental system is within the bounds of predicted theoretical results. For instance, as quoted in the lecture notes, at SNR= 10.4dB, the BER is about 1.510-6. From fig.18 above, a similar point, of SNR=10.3806dB gives a BER of 1.48810-6. Hence confirming the accuracy of the results obtained from the experiment. The plot confirms that as the signal-to-noise ratio increases, the error probability reduces in line with conventional knowledge. In addition, the process of using a baseband signal to modulate the phase of a sinusoid was observed, converting it into a bandpass signal for transmission ease. Also, the use of Additive White Gaussian Noise to simulate the channel provides an insight into what might be expected in a live system environment, under varying degrees of noise exposure. Finally, because the received data sequence will most likely be displaced from its true positions as demonstrated experimentally, the use of a time delayed version of the original transmitted sequence to compare and check for errors was justified.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a fast paced play full of dramatic tension. Discuss how the portrayal of sex/sexuality fuels that tension, increasing the dramatic effect. Choose some but not all of the possible examples you might used ââ¬Å"Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,â⬠Written by Tennessee Williams is an excellent play about a troubled family that is dealing with buried acts of deception, conflict and tension. Along with these problems comes sexuality and sex, a very important aspect of the play which increases the dramatic effect. The pressure between husband and wife created by sexual tensions. The need for Brick to be seen as a man by repressing homosexual feelings from the world by turning to the effects of alcohol. Maggieââ¬â¢s sexual frustration with her husband who refuses to show her the passion she is longing. The frustration Big Daddy feels from not being sexually attracted to his wife. The relationship between Big Daddy and Brick, how they are more alike then they seem to be. These are among the main problems concerning sexuality escalating dramatic tension in this play. The sexual tension between Brick and Maggie is one of the most commonly occurring conflicts throughout the play.Brick and Maggie are a couple in the play who have two opposite feelings for each other. In Act 1 Maggie says to Brick ââ¬Å"You look so cool, so cool, so enviably coolâ⬠the quote presents Brick to be represented to the audience as a man who is self contained, cool, untouchable and perfect physically. He physically embodies a real man. Maggie seeââ¬â¢s herself as a women who is dissatisfied, ignored, and exhausted from sharing her desires with Brick as he does not feel the same way. Maggie refers to herself as a cat on a hot tin roof loving someone knowing that the love cannot be returned.Maggie confession to Brick about their relationship only increases the tensions between the two characters and forces Maggie to question their friendship for something much stronger . Maggie becomes bitter and anxious like a cat, she takes into account that without Brickââ¬â¢s love she will remain childless, and that they will be less favored to Big Daddy his heir and their position in his household will be put at risk. Brick, self concerned and rugged. Throughout the play, Brick continues to wash away all of his troubles and problems by drinking excessively. This is a problem that he has developed to separate himself from the problems. ââ¬Å"One man has one great good true thing in his life. One great good thing which is true! I had a friendship with Skipper. You are naming it dirty! â⬠This quote from Act 1 shows Brick acting out at Maggie for implying that his and Skippers relationship was more than just a friendship. This is the first time these implications are made and the first time in the play that Brick looses his cool, he links thoughts of homosexuality with disgust. This shows that the implications could be true, because when Maggie shares her own sexual approach, he reacts in a cool, calm and a completely removed manner, not showing any signs of concern. ââ¬Å"You two had something that had to be kept on ice, yes, incorruptible, yes! â⬠Maggie continues on about Brickââ¬â¢s relationship with Skipper, forcing Brick to acknowledge the fact that he did have homosexual feelings for his best friend rather than continuously mourning his death over the fact that his feelings had to be kept in secret from society.Bricks main goal is to keep his masculinity intact ââ¬Å"Why canââ¬â¢t exceptional friendship.. Between two men be respectedâ⬠Brick is disturbed by the fact that his desire is jeopardizing his masculinity, something that he cannot throw away because of sharing the possibility of his homosexuality. Big Daddy, the large ââ¬Å"Mississippi Redneckâ⬠is the millionaire father of the family, effected with cancer unknowingly. Brick is the only one who knows, and hides it. Big Daddy believes that he ha s come back from the dead, realizing that his money cannot buy him happiness. His sexual life is now brought back into the picture. He was never pleased with his wife and did not love her the time they were married, he wants to explore sex again now that he has a second chance. This is much like Brick and Maggieââ¬â¢s current relationship, except Brickââ¬â¢s preference in gender, showing how alike Brick is to his father. He has a strong affection for his son Brick, who reminds him very much of himself. For this reason he wants Brick to be the heir to his throne. The only way to achieve this is if Brick and Maggie provide a grandchild for Big Daddy to continue his legacy.Although the possibility of this grandchild in unlikely because of Brick and Maggieââ¬â¢s sexual relationship. ââ¬Å"Now, hold on.. I knocked around in my timeâ⬠When Big Daddy finally learns the truth about his sonââ¬â¢s sexuality he confesses his experimentation as a growing man, it is here that Br ick and Big Daddy are more alike than ever. Now that the truth behind Brickââ¬â¢s sexuality is revealed he tells Big Daddy that he is still dying from cancer. ââ¬Å"You told me! I told you! â⬠As a result of Big Daddy forcing Brick to face his homosexuality, Brick forces Big Daddy to receive the news of his inevitable death. Now Big Daddy is occupying the position that Brick has just gotten out of, Brick is revealing and Big Daddy is receiving. Sexuality and sex in this play does increase the dramatic tension between the characters. It is something that effects everyone in the play somehow. The examples above are only three of many others. The relationship between Maggie and Brick, is almost completely dependent on Bricks sexuality, even his excessive drinking is strongly related to his sexuality. He knows that he cannot be the heir to Big Daddy without a child, yet still chooses not to engage in sexual relations with Maggie. This makes Maggie greatly concerned about her plac e in the household. Big Daddy comes to a sort of revelation, thinking he has been given a second life. He acts cruel with his wife, because he accepts the fact that he never truly loved her and has been hiding his sexual appetite their entire marriage. The dramatic effect in this play is lead by sexuality and sex, it acts as foundation that builds up to vital events in the play.

What is the relationship between leadership and stress?
In a rapidly changing world where individuals and communities live 24 by 7, communicate with different cultures at increasing internet speeds, work two to three jobs a day just to support a standardized lifestyles, leaders take the toll a level higher. Stress is evident in leadership brought about by both internal and external elements. But stress and leadership cannot be taken apart. These two elements interact and connive to bring out the best and the worst in the individual who is mandated to show the vision and lead the way no matter what. ââ¬Å"Stress levels rocketed in 2005 ââ¬â all around the world, whether economic activity was picking up or slowing down,â⬠said Andrew Godfrey, partner at Grant Thornton. Keeping up with fast growth or combating recession are both equally stressful, although Asian business leaders are under particular strain, as their businesses and markets continue to show phenomenal growth.â⬠(BBC, 2006) But John C. Maxwell relates adversity that causes stress as great opportunities for leaders to develop the limits of their potential. When leaders find themselves stressed out, their wisdom is challenged because it is those very moments when an individual gives in to his weaknesses. But for leaders who are experienced enough they would very well know what to do when they find themselves in the middle of a stressful situation. Congruently, leaders would often times cause stress themselves as they aim for more efficient, effective and economical ways of leading the community or the team. In this light, stress becomes a tool of the leader to forge new paths, new solutions and innovations to help the team reach their goals. In many ways, stress and leadership has always been in tandem with each other. The relationship between these two concepts has essentially led to greater heights of civilization, socialization and camaraderie between individuals, groups and cultures. At best, stress and leadership has always forged man to develop into the best possible leaders an individual can become. References BBC News. Museums Hold Our History and Culture
Museums Hold Our History and Culture Free Online Research Papers Museums are places that we like to go to learn about our history, our culture and our very existence. Most of the things we learn in school are condensed into this place full of various artefacts and pieces of our identity. Reflecting on this, its hard to think about what youd put in a museum if you ran one, and even harder to think about the responsibility shouldered by the person responsible for this. Not only education, but profit, integrity are also some of the things that the Museum and the people choreographing it must consider, in order for the museum to be successful as well as educational. People in museums and the museums themselves are easily smitten by the most expensive and oldest artefacts, without considering the value of it. Value in terms of instructive purposes that is. At times, it is the rarest and oldest artefacts that museums comprise of hold very little purpose but put the museums in a lot of debt. Similar to Rockefellers case when bad management and over usage of money caused his museum to go into the black hole of misery and debt, a museum that considers only monetary value over the value of education can never be successful. The fact that the price tags arent displayed along with the museum pieces, should make the job the person responsible for the artefacts easier. Artefacts that possess little monetary value compared to the value of its purpose in education and history should be considered greatest. Since museums rely strictly on the number of people that visit it, they should pick artefacts that are related to its exhibits and have a clear message that says Im here because I teach you, not because Im worth a lot of money. Something you hear a lot as a child is that if you study and get a good job, you will become rich and successful in life. Likewise, the foundation for a museums success in life is its ability to attract people that want to learn and educate them. Simple artefacts that attract those with a curious mind tend to make more money than highly known artefacts that cost millions, but offer next to no educational value. Schools that come to museums for trips like to go places that they can learn something new while having fun. A museum offering paintings worth millions will attract a few art classes, however, a museum offering simple tools used by primitives will attract everything from history students, to those who are simply interested in ancient things. It is using this fact, that it is clear what kind of artefacts a museum should secure. The more people that come, the more money the museum makes, and hence the more profit they achieve. After only recently visiting the Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto, that it dawned upon me as to how many important historical facts are left out of such places. This may be a different from the setting of a museum, however the both places are meant to educate the public on the past and its cultures. Going into a exhibit showing us the colonialization of Africa is no different than walking into a re-enactment of the place itself. While going through the village, children and adults alike discussed the wonderful life of the old earth. A time when nothing more than food, shelter and a happy family mattered. Living in a town where everyone knew each other and got along happily and walking down the street youd wave to your friendly next door local butcher or blacksmith. This is exactly what is shown in these re-enactment such as the one known as Colonial Williamsburg. However, one critical point this so called re-enactment failed to point out was the obvious that still exists to th is day. This obvious refers to death, unhappiness, hierarchy and a caste system, not to mention the slavery, the cruelty, the diseases and the ongoing oppression of men and women alike is virtually nonexistent. While it is the job of the exhibits in museums and these re-enactments to educate the public then why are such important things being left out that would make the public say wow am I glad to be where I am right now rather than saying Oh my, how wonderful it would to live in a place like this. Museums exist for the distinct purpose, which is to educate the public. Educating the public is such an important task, that everything in the museums must be coordinated in order to be accurate and informative. Exclusions such as those in the Colonial Williamsburg and poor choice of artefacts just cannot happen. The job of the museum and its people is great, however their responsibility for success is even greater and that is exactly why museums need to be careful and smart about the artefacts that it chooses. While a 1000 good things teaches a person, one mistake can change their way of thinking forever. Print Any Type of Document Using Delphi
Print Any Type of Document Using Delphi If your Delphi application needs to operate on various types of files, one of the tasks you might have for your application is to allow the user of the application to print a file, whatever the file type is. Most document-oriented applications, like MS Word, MS Excel or Adobe can easily print documents created in that program. For example, Microsoft Word saves the text you write in documents with DOC extension. Since Word determines what is the raw contents of a .DOC file it knows how to print .DOC files. The same applies for any known file type holding some printable information. What if you need to print various types of documents/files from your application? Can you know how to send the file to the printer in order for it to be printed correctly? Print From Delphi We can ask Windows what application can print, for example, a PDF file. Or, even better, we can tell Windows, heres one PDF file, send it to the application associated / in charge of printing PDF files. To do this, open up Windows Explorer, navigate to a directory containing some printable files. For most of the file types on your system, when you right-click a file in Windows Explorer, you will locate the Print command. Executing the Print shell command will result in the file being sent to the default printer. Well, thats exactly what we want: for a file type, call a method that will send the file to the associated application for printing. The function we are after is the ShellExecute API function. ShellExecute: Print / PrintTo However, ShellExecute can do much more. ShellExecute can be used to launch an application, open Windows Explorer, initiate a search beginning in the specified directory, and- whats of greatest interest to us- print the specified file. Specify Printer Using the above call, a document document.doc located on the root of the C drive will be sent to the Windows default printer. ShellExecute always uses the default printer for the print action. What if you need to print to a different printer, what if you want to allow the user to change the printer? The PrintTo Shell Command Before you copy and paste: the Printer global variable (TPrinter type) available in all Delphi programs can be used to manage any printing performed by an application. The printer is defined in the printers unit, ShellExecute is defined in the shellapi unit. Drop a TComboBox on a form. Name it cboPrinter. Set Style to csDropDownLidtPut the next two lines in the forms OnCreate even handler: //have available printers in the combo boxcboPrinter.Items.Assign(printer.Printers);//pre-select the default / active printercboPrinter.ItemIndex : printer.PrinterIndex; use to print any document type to a specified printer Note: some document types do not have an application associated with printing. Some do not have the printto action specified.

My thoughts and opinions that i have created Research Paper
My thoughts and opinions that i have created - Research Paper Example It is through such things that peopleââ¬â¢s lives change dramatically and before they know it they are physically, emotionally or socially disable and challenged. Once people are in such situations, they find themselves isolated as the rest of the community regard them as problematic and unfit to mix with others. My course has made me realize that this kind of perception is very wrong and the worst ever (Powaski, 1987). It is important for everyone to know that human beings are all the same despite their situations in terms of health, state of living or finance. My class taught me a lot in terms of human life and its possible variations and I was able to know that life may start well and end bad and vice versa. It is also important as I learnt, that in life people should expect anything and when a person does not understand other humansââ¬â¢ unfortunate situation and show remorse, they are likely to also suffer in the same way due to luck of attention from sympathizers. I also was able to understand that people may see the unfortunate on the streets or neighborhood and ignore them not because they despise or hate them, but because they do not know how to approach the situations. Sometimes people also ignore them due to the fact that they experience a creepy feeling due to how the individuals look (bad state) even though they may be willing to assist (Langley, 2009). I will also admit that before the course I had a somehow similar problem of not knowing how to go near such a person, but now I am professionally capable of doing what needs to be done in order to change the persons situation and at least make them feel accepted and loved in the society. Taking a career as a Community Help profession has made me proud because apart from assisting people in the community to change their living conditions and encourage them in life, I have also been able to make other people who are fortunate to understand that they are not more special or important than the les s fortunate. Through my course, my way of thinking greatly changed and instead of having a shallow mind on issues such as community help and change, I am now able to think critically and weigh things step by step starting from being in those peoplesââ¬â¢ shoes and imagining how they feel, their wishes and their experiences especially in terms of isolation from the society. This group of people according to what I have learnt has no one else to look up to except us as the community which is capable of assisting them. I learnt that luck of knowledge on such an issue is one of the factors contributing to poverty and diseases in our community yet these are some of the things which the community keeps preaching that it needs to eradicate. It is through people like us that such plans can be accomplished. This topic takes me back to problems that were caused by calamities which I would say were intentional such as the Atom Bomb on Japan for instance and the Confrontation in the Tiananme n Square. In these two incidences, many innocent people were killed and injured especially women and children. Students were also killed in large numbers and many were injured. Most of these people who suffered during the two incidences were people living normal lives (Chaffee, 2011) just like most of us

Internetworking Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Internetworking - Essay Example It was introduced in one of the oldest wide area network - ARPANET. It is a widely used architecture because most of the computers and networks are configured to follow this suite and it is open to all. The TCP/IP reference model is a 4 layered model. The layers from top to bottom are Application Layer, Transport Layer, Internet Layer and Host-to-Network Layer. A data in a computer is going to the network from the Application Layer to the Host-to-Network Layer through the intermediate layers. Data from the network is getting to an application in the reverse order. Application Layer consists of certain higher level protocols like TELNET (for remote login/ to get a virtual remote terminal), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), SMTP (Simple Main Transfer Protocol), HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), DNS (Domain Name System) protocols etc. The protocols in this layer will produce messages smaller in size to become compatible with the Transport Layer for an outward data flow and join the data messages to the original data for the application in case of inward message. Transport Layer consist the protocols like TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol). The reliability and the error checking of the data are managed here. This layer is responsible for the communication between two computers. ... The two versions of IP are IPv4 and IPv6.The lowest layer is the Host-to-Network Layer and this layer has the direct contact with the networking hardware. The data in this layer will be in the form of frames or byte series. Few protocols like PPP (Point to Point Protocol) are available in this layer. One of the most useful services of TCP/IP is the naming service it provides. Information sharing and exchange on an Internet work become easy and comfortable through this. The most widely used naming services are NIS (Network Information Service) and DNS (Domain Name System). NIS is used to provide information that has to be known throughout the network, to all machines on the network. There will be NIS server to keep all the information for the NIS. In case of a UNIX system, the configuration files handled by NIS are /etc/group, /etc/hosts, /etc/netmasks, /etc/passwd, /etc/protocols, /etc/rpc, and /etc/services. For setting up NIS, we have to set up both the NIS Server and NIS Clients. DNS is used for naming a host uniquely on a network, especially on the Internet. In this IP addresses of the computers or other interfaces are mapped to certain names with a typical naming strategy. Each group of similar computers is included in same domain and the domains are created in a hierarchical manner e.g. for the top level domains are .com, .net, .org etc. The details of the naming are stored in the DNS Server as resource records. There are two types of mapping files. The forward mapping file is used to convert names to its IP addresses and reverse mapping record is used to convert IP addresses to its symbolic names. Format of a resource record entry is as follows. Name (variable length) type(16bits) class(16bits) ttl(32bits) data For DNS configuration in a UNIX system, we
